Media Debates

Everette E Dennis & John C Merrill, 1991Longman Publishing Group

This book has a collection of media issues that you could run as a classroom debate. It would be good as a guide to address Unit 4 outcome 3, Media Infuence.

A first look at communication theory

Emory Griffin, 2009, Mc-GrawHill Companies

A book that has good descriptions of communication theories. There is nice little cartoons and graphic that explain the theories. The illustrations would be good to use to expain the theories in a visual way to students.
Help for an in depth understanding of the theories, for Unit 4, Outcome 3 Media Influence.

Television, globalization and cultural identities

Chris Barker -1999 Open University Press,

Violence on television: distribution, form, context, and themes

Barrie Gunter, Jackie Harrison, Maggie Wykes - 2003
A book that examines that findings from studies that look into children watching television and the effects it can have on children. It is quite detailed and only extracts would be needed to illustrate the findings.

Good to address Unit 4, Outcome 3 Media Influence.

The Simpsons: Itchy & Scratchy & Marge (1990)

DVD, Disc 2, Second series of the Simpsons, 20th century Fox.

This episode of The Simpsons simplifies the concept of media influence.  The character Maggie watches a violent cartoon, and hits her Dad Homer on the head. The episode highlights copy cat behaviour that can occur through watching media.

Great introduction to media influence Unit 4, Outcome 4.
